Additional Information
This application aims to address concerns in ACE feedback d 14.08.25 *
Venues identify young people as under-represented in their audiences, and see a potential for the project to engage with this group. I plan to help reach them by offering practical, hands-on workshops aimed at 16-19s.
In consultation with local contacts in this age range or with people working with them, I envisage 1 workshop per venue for 10-15 people, with no previous experience necessary. Participants use craft and live cinema tools (eg Isadora software) to make their own moving images, or remix mine, in a way that reflects the creative workflow of the films, and responds to the same music. The aim is to enhance people’s encounter with and interpretation of the films and soundworlds, and at the same time help develop their own skills (an immediate short-term impact that can be measured in the workshop.)
Venues will host workshops on site, marketing to people in advance alongside S&M and NMC, but also reaching out through specific local networks:
Depot Lewes
1) 6th form colleges. 16-19yo students of film, music, game design, visual arts will be contacted through established contacts developed by Anthony Gates, Depot Education lead (who also teaches film locally.) Colleges inc. East Sussex College Lewes campus; Varndene; BHASVIC. Depot has resources to support travel to venue for some participants.
2) ‘Kino Collective’ – a young adults filmgoers club, est. for 8 years, with rolling new membership.
Electric Palace Cinema Hastings
1) EPC will faciliate contact with existing networks and 6th form colleges who work with students at Bexhill College, and East Sussex College Hastings campus. The latter work with 16-19s and older students at undergrad level.
Other potential contexts include programmes for young people supported by The Bright Foundation, and DV8 Creative College.
2) EPC think workshops could also attract older adult participants, from Hastings’ local artist pracitioner community. With suffient demand I could run another workshop.
The Barn Cinema, Dartington
does not have active FE contacts, but sees the project as a way to explore the possibility. I am approaching nearest 6th form colleges (eg King Edward VI, Totnes.) Dartington is not a population centre, which may make access a challenge. Venue lead Ali Donkin has programmed screening and WS dates near start of school holidays, staggered over 3 weeks to allow word-of-mouth to develop interest (significant local factor.)
Ludlow Assembly Rooms
Jess Laurie, Programming and Engagement, will use contacts with
1) Local 6th form colleges working with students sharing the same profile as above.
2) Local Housing Association development officers working with young people, often homeless or at risk of being so, to create links for them into cultural experiences
3) JL is developing a youth membership plan called ‘Stellar’ – still at an early stage, the project is seen as potential boost for this.
Dates are scheduled one week after the start of Autumn term 26.
Workshops will be offered free at Lewes, Ludlow and Dartington.
Hastings will charge a small fee to help meet their costs, as they are a relatively small venue.
Depot Lewes, Electric Palace Hastings and Ludlow Assembly Rooms offer additonal relaxed or ‘everybody friendly’ screenings. (The Barn Dartington may also but this is not confirmed.) As noted, these events recognise meditative aspects of the films, commented on by audiences identifying as neurodivergent, and are aimed at people who may for example find conventional cinema conditions stressful for any reason.
Although these films are conceived as audiovisal works, they have also been enjoyed by people who experienced them only visually. People with hearing impairment / who are deaf will be reached through marketing for standard screenings.

Application history *
My first application for this project d.18 04 25 received feedback d.30 05 25 suggesting I give more information about plans for the work in the longer term.
My revised application d.26 06 25 aimed to respond to this.
I received further feedback d.14 08 25, recommending I show clearer plans for inclusive audience engagement, and detail on how diverse or underrepresented audiences will be directly involved.
The current application aims to respond to this.
